A massive shoutout to President Eddie Morris from the University of VA for his incredible leadership. IMPORTANT 2022 CONFERENCE UPDATE:

Unfortunately, due to the ongoing budget constraints that many academic institutions still have in place for travel and conferences, and the increased amount of rescheduled events this year, an in-person Elevator U conference will not take place in 2022. We will have our annual membership and elections via a virtual meeting during June, along with monthly educational webinars and other opportunities. We are actively planning the 2023 conference and will make announcements in the near future.

MEMBERSHIP RENEWALS:

Beginning June 2022, we will reimplement the yearly membership renewal process for our professional, associate, affiliate and industry members. The annual renewal fee will be $150. To assist our university/professional members during the pandemic, Elevator U has not required a membership renewal fee since 2019. We will be announcing our 2022-23 member benefits next month.

WEBINARS:

The first three presentations in our webinar series for 2022 can be found below. We encourage all members, potential members and industry suppliers register to attend. All of them will provide excellent information that you can use on-the-job. The webinars will consist of an educational presentation with a Q&A session afterwards. After June, all webinars will only be available to current Elevator U Members. If you are interested in presenting, please contact elevatoru@gmail.com.

For the first time, Elevator U will be a partner association in the UNITED 2020 event to be held in Houston, TX next September. We are very excited about this opportunity and encourage all of our members to attend and register as EU members. As a reminder, we will not have our own conference in 2020 due to our partnership in this great event. There will be much more information to come and you can keep up-to-date by visiting the official webpage for this event at www.unitedconvention.com. As a reminder, all 2019 EU memberships are valid through December 2020!

IN MEMORIAM: JEFF COOPER

IN MEMORIAM: JEFF COOPER.: Jeff Cooper, one of the founding members of Elevator U and host of the first EU (then known as Big 10 & Friends) in 1998, passed away unexpectedly on September 26 at age 65. Cooper, known as just "Coop" by many friends, had been employed at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, for the past 38 years, most recently as elevator systems specialist. Colleagues remember him as knowledgeable, kind, funny and always "a class act." Cooper hosted EU in 1999, 2002 and 2010. A man for whom family always came first, Cooper enjoyed playing and collecting guitars, bird watching and cooking for family and friends. Survivors include wife, Kathryn "Kitty"; children, Kati and Cole; brother, Richard; and mother, Lucille. Services were held in October. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Cooper's name to Natalie's Second Chance (no-kill dog) Shelter, 10 South 16th Street, Lafayette, Indiana 47905 or nataliessecondchance.org.

US/Canadian & European Elevator Code Document From IAEC

There is currently an effort to “Converge” the European Standard EN 81-20 and EN 81-50 (ISO 8100 parts 1, 2, and 3), a performance-based lift standard, with ASME A17.1/CSA B44, the prescriptive code, in the United States and Canada. Convergence had the goal of removing barriers to trade by creating a global prescriptive standard that would be equivalent around the world, a lofty and desirable goal, provided true equivalency is achieved. It changed to be a cut and paste of EN 81-20 and EN 81-50 with little fanfare. Where one Code or Standard used in any comparison is not equivalent, it should not simply be claimed without a full review. This position paper speaks against convergence until a rewrite of both A17.1/B44 and ISO 8100 is performed that is truly equivalent in reality.
